Pakistan strongly condemns the merciless killing and injuries inflicted on innocent unarmed Palestinian civilian protesters by the occupying authorities. The indiscriminate and brutal use of force on demonstrators is truly appalling. It brings back the harrowing memories of Sharpeville and Soweto, something the world had consigned to the dustbin of history. Such savagery should have no place in our world.
Whilst we mourn the latest massacre pf those demanding peaceful assembly, the underlying, unresolved inalienable right for self-determination for the Palestinians remains at the core of the seemingly perpetual crisis.
The latest events contribute another nail in the coffin of what was left of the Middle East Peace Process. Jerusalem has a special status under the UNGA’s Partition Plan for Palestine (Resolution 181, dated November 1947). Security Council Resolution 476 and 478 further consolidate the special legal and political status of Jerusalem.
Pakistan calls on the United Nations and the international community to investigate the current wave of violence. We also call upon the international community to take measures to break the cycle of violence and relentless human rights violations of the Palestinian people.
Pakistan also renews its call for establishment of a viable, independent and contiguous State of Palestine, on the basis of internationally agreed parameters, the pre-1967 borders, and with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, living side by side and in peace with all its neighbours. Such a solution is the only sustainable guarantor for peace in the Middle East.
I thank you.
