The OIC Member States strongly believe in the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms of all peoples without any discrimination on the basis of sex, race, creed, religion, colour or socio-economic status.
The OIC resolution 16/18 on “Combating intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatization of, and discrimination, incitement to violence and violence against persons based on religion or belief” was an important step to combat violence on the basis of religion. The adoption of this resolution with consensus for the last seven years in this Council reflects the commitment of the Member States to fight this menace. This resolution indeed provides an Action Plan for the Member States to combat the ever increasing instances of Islamophobia, intolerance, negative stereo-typing, stigmatization and discrimination and violence all over the world.
OIC Member States are concerned over increased incidents of anti-Muslim attacks and sentiments. We believe that such manifestations of religious hatred and intolerance are against the spirit of cooperation and peaceful co-existence. They are also impediments to the promotion and protection of human rights. In the same vein, it is highly expected that the OHCHR in cooperation with the international community, will promote adequate protection against acts of hate crimes, hate speech, discrimination, intimidation and coercion resulting from defamation and negative stereotyping of religions, and incitement to religious hatred, as well as denigration of venerated personalities.
Recognition and respect for cultural diversity is an asset for advancement and welfare of humanity. Muslims across the world have been the victims of the incidents of hate crime and violence not only on the basis of their religion but also on their appearance. We feel that it is completely outrageous in the Twenty First Century that women and girls in particular are targeted for their choice of clothing in liberal democratic societies. These incidents are motivated by the misjudged media campaign and activities of extremist elements who do not believe in the culture of co-existence, tolerance and peace.
We urge the international community to take preventive measures against those elements that are detrimental to the promotion of tolerance and respect and ensure that no human person is discriminated on the basis of religion or belief.
I thank you.
