On behalf of OIC member States, we would like to thank the Special Rapporteur and the Expert mechanism for presentation of their reports.
OIC has always campaigned for the equal treatment for all human beings and giving equal importance to all human rights. Islam is a religion of peace and had advocated fourteen hundred years ago for the equality of human kind when the rest of the world was divided into factions on the basis of colour, race, creed etc. With these principles in mind, we believe that indigenous people have equal role to play in the nation building. The true realization of all human rights cannot be achieved without addressing the basic needs and development goals of the developing countries. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Right to Development are important in this regard as rightly pointed out by the Special Rapporteur. By ensuring inclusive development and resource mobilization through international partnerships, we can move one step closer of eradicating any pockets of poverty and backwardness. In this way we would be able to protect and promote the rights of indigenous people in true sense.
We believe that unity in diversity should be the underlying principle in both national and international scene. By focusing on the commonalities we can overcome prejudices and pave a better future for all.
We would request the Special Rapporteur as well as the Expert mechanism to give equal attention to the rights of indigenous people in developing as well as developed countries rather than too much emphasis on developing countries, since we believe that it is an issue of global importance. In this context, particular attention needs to be given to the rights of indigenous peoples in developed countries who mostly live in remote and desolated areas with minimum standards of living, and their rights have been ignored.
We would ask the Special Rapporteur and the Expert mechanism on their views how ensuring equitable and inclusive development both nationally and internationally can help in realization of rights of indigenous people.
I thank you Mr. President
