I have the honour to make this statement on behalf of the OIC.
The OIC group strongly believes in the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms of all peoples without any discrimination on the basis of sex, race, religion, colour or socio-economic status.
The OIC resolution 16/18 on “Combating intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatization of, and discrimination, incitement to violence and violence against, persons based on religion or belief” was an important step to combat violence on the basis of religion. The adoption of this resolution with consensus for the last three years in this Council reflects the commitment of the Member States to fight this menace. This resolution indeed provides an Action Plan for the Member States to combat the ever increasing instances of Islamophobia, intolerance, negative stereo-typing, stigmatization and discrimination and violence all over the world.
The OIC is concerned over increased incidents of Islamophobia and believes that these true manifestations of religious hatred and intolerance are against culture of cooperation and peaceful co-existence and serve as impediments to promotion and protection of human rights.
As per Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, cultural diversity is an asset for advancement and welfare of humanity which can contribute to the eradication of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. In this vein, it is highly expected that the OHCHR in full conformity with its constituencies to promote This culture requires Member States to introduce adequate protection against acts of hate crimes, hate speech, discrimination, intimidation and coercion resulting from defamation and negative stereotyping of religions, and incitement to religious hatred, as well as denigration of venerated personalities.
Muslims across the world are the victims of the incidents of hate crime and violence on the basis of their religion. These incidents are motivated by the misjudged media campaign and activities of extremist elements who do not believe in the culture of co-existence and peace.
We urge the international community to take preventive measures against those elements that are detrimental to the promotion of tolerance and respect.
I thank you.
