I am making this statement on behalf of OIC member states.
We have taken note of the reports of the Special Rapporteur on Persons with Disabilities and Independent Expert on Albinism.
The OIC attaches great importance to the rights of person with disabilities and has addressed it in its various declarations and programs of action. The persons with disabilities are an inspiration for everyone as they overcome all the obstacles and hurdles and perform like normal people in all walks of life.
Accessibility and universal design of public offices and services along with provision of support systems to person with disabilities are important for advancing equality in the society. We need to create enabling environment by taking concrete steps such as adapting or acquiring specific equipment; reorganizing work related routine; customizing and adapting curricula and other information material; adjusting medical procedures; and enabling access of support personnel for the persons with disabilities.
Can the Special Rapporteur identify the measures to ensure provision of technical and financial support to the developing countriesin achieving these objectives?
We take note of the effortsof the Independent Expert on Albinism in explaining the concept of witchcraft and its negative linkages with Albinism. The broad range of attacks and assaults against people with Albinism, as well as the trafficking of their body parts need to be condemned in the strongest manner. We concur with Independent Expert’sassertion that the traditional medicine has alot of significance and usefulness, and should not be confused with harmful practices of witchcraft.
Considering the complexity of challenges related to Albinism, we need to follow multi-sectoral approach, and develop and implement focussed strategies and plans.
We need to overcome prejudices, stereotypes and preconceived notions and break the shackles of isolation to integrate them in the society.
We request the Independent Expert toelaborate ways to bridge the gaps in legal and institutional domains to combat discrimination against persons with Albinism.
I thank you.
